Vintage Spectra-Physics model 119 HeNe laser head with model 259B exciter with Servo plugin. This system still works. The output power is slightly low – less than 75 µ W – but it powers up and locks normally. Power cycling and running may help but no guarantees. The SP-119 was probably the first real commercial stabilized HeNe laser, released around the mid-1960s. I don’t know if this sample is quite that old but who will know? – Both the laser head and exciter are in very good physical condition and the beam expander (which usually vanishes before these appear for sale being considered the only thing of value) is included. This is the exact system documented in Sam’s Laser FAQ. Also included is an original new/unused SP-053 two-Brewster replacement HeNe laser tube. This tube has been tested within the last year and produced over 300 µW at 5 mA in a custom resonator with modern mirrors. At 7 mA, the power was well over 400 µW. However, the cavity configuration is not the same as in the 119 laser head, so these values are probably somewhat high. Being soft seal, the tube must be run frequenty to maintain this power. In fact it required over a week at 5 mA to climb from no power to these values, and after 2 or 3 weeks, it had declined substantially. It is shown in the custom test stand in the last 2 photos. The test stand is NOT intended to be included, but I might be talked into it if that’s what it takes to close the deal. If installed in this laser head, the system should easily exceed new specifications, at least as long as you continue to pet and run it. However, installation is non-trivial including maintaining aboluste cleanliness and care to avoid damage to the tube or mirrors. I will not bail you out if it gets screwed up! These systems are becoming extremely rare, especially ones in good cosmetic and working condition. But why would you want to? This is a piece of history. Thanks for looking, — sam.
