BAKELITE Vintage HYFRECATOR 1940′s Medical Device By BIRTCHER Los Angeles

HYFRECATOR – BIRTCHER CO. Los Angeles – this is probably from the 1940′s. Bakelite Case – cord with foot switch. Very good condition – no cracks or chips in bakelite case. Size 8.5″ x 5″ wide. A Hyfrecator is a low-powered medical apparatus used in electrosurgery on conscious patients, usually in an office setting. It is used to destroy tissue directly, and to stop bleeding during minor surgery. It was introduced as a brand name for a device introduced in 1940 by the Birtcher Corporation of Los Angeles.
