An exceptional relic in every possible way, this mechanical prototype was to adorn chiropractic and orthopedic doctors’ offices throughout the land. A press of the lever, and the figure slouches, demonstrating to the patient the height loss effects of injuries to the spine and other back problems. Alas, national distribution never came to pass. The piece was given to my grandfather (a mailman in Hollywood during the 1950′s) by its inventor (who lived somewhere along his route) in the hopes that his daughter (my mother) would enjoy playing with it. Which she did –gently. Stashed away, forgotten in a box for decades, the Payne Mechanical Posture Manikin Model D-2 has been passed along to me –and it needs to go to the right home. A museum, a physician’s office, an aficionado of obscure medical pieces. Measures almost 24 inches in height by 5.75 inches in width by approximately 3 inches in depth.
