The case is 4″ long and just under 1.5″ in diameter. This is a rare old piece of medical equipment and there are a couple of these on display in Museums like the Smithsonian. Exactly it’s purpose is not clear. It could be used as a mold to make suppositories. Obstetrical gynecological irrigator invented by Dr. First patented in 1842. The device consists of a cylindrical metal reservoir of around 500 ml, in which a piston moves. At the top of the reservoir is a winding key to operate it. A tap is attached to the base of the device, to which a tube with an extended cannula can be fitted. The cylinder is stamped: “Irrigateur système du Docteur Eguisier, N°2 – Marque de Fabrique”, surrounded by 2 caducei. This strange medical instrument linked to feminine hygiene of a bygone era will find its place in a curiosity cabinet, a collection of antique medical equipment, or simply in a vintage setting.
