Rudolf Schindler was known as the “Father Of Gastroscopy” and persecuted by the Nazi regime fled the country to America. His history is rich and well documented…. (18881968) was a German physician, who practiced medicine as a gastroenterologist. He is regarded widely as the. He was born in Berlin. A fascination with marine biology and collection of seashells became a lifelong hobby. Young Schindler’s decision to study medicine derived from his respect and admiration of his maternal uncle Richard Simon, a prominent Berlin ophthalmologist. On graduation from the University of Berlin, Schindler settled happily in a rural practice that was soon interrupted by a call to service as a medical officer in the German Army. During World War I he was impressed by the prevalence of alimentary ailments in both the military and civilian populations. He became convinced that much digestive debility could be traced to morbid conditions in the gastric mucosa, then undetectable by conventional methods of diagnosis. The answer, he concluded, lay in direct inspection of the internal gastric milieuin short, by gastroscopy. Schindler’s clinic in Munich became a mecca for gastroenterologists from around the world. Threatened by Nazi persecution, Schindler emigrated to the United States in 1934 under the aegis of Drs. Marie Ortmayer and Walter Palmer who provided a haven at the University of Chicago. In 1941 Schindler founded a club that eventually became the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, thus opening a promising new field of diagnosis and management of digestive diseases.
